Compupen Technology Pen2Net’s lead technology is the Compupen device. Shaped as a regular pen, and capable of writing on traditional writing surfaces, the Compupen device offers data acquisition capabilities and a memory for a full day’s worth of writing. The device offers wireless capabilities as a standard feature and readily interfaces with devices supporting the Bluetooth wireless protocol. Pen2Net’s vision for the Compupen family of products includes an added-value Applications Suite for handwriting-to-text conversion, digital authentication, and timestamping features provided via a central server base. Pen2Net, Inc is in discussions with partners for commercialization of the technology in areas such as education, business, law, science, cellular telephony (short text messaging), e-mail composition for the wireless internet, secure e-commerce, national security, intellectual property, and field service reports. Compupen - A Wireless Consumer Device Powerful, High-Accuracy Optical Tracking The Compupen device overcomes the drawbacks of competitive data input technology while at the same time surpassing them in networkability and security. The CompuPen device uses a regular ballpoint ink cartridge and a standard AA battery. It writes like a regular ballpoint, but while writing it creates a digital copy of the document using an optoelectronic sensor. The documents are sent wirelessly via bluetooth to a Bluetooth® enabled PC or server. Unlike all earlier digital pen devices, the CompuPen does not require special paper, special writing pads, or special attachments. It is small, inexpensive, and extremely user-friendly. Each pen has a unique identifier confirming authorship of each document . Moreover, the output of the pen features 128-bit encryption for added security. Pen2Net, Inc is in discussions with other partners for commercialization of the technology in areas such as education, business, law, science, cellular telephony (short text messaging), e-mail composition for the wireless internet, secure e-commerce, national security, intellectual property, and field service reports. Based on a simple difference calculation, the pen’s optical sensor accurately takes thousands of digital images of the writing surface and interfaces a tip depression sensor into a system that can detect true handwriting digitally on almost any surface. In addition, the use of standard ink and refillable cartridges allows for long-term, universal usage even by any human user, without the need for mastery of a complex, PDA-style interface or mobile-phone-style alphanumeric keypad. Featuring a powerful processor and high capacity onboard memory, the pen effortlessly maintains track of a day’s worth of writing information, even for the most prolific writers. Data management applications on the pen allow for quick indexing of documents via one-button menu clicks, and efficient processor cycling technology extends available battery life to accommodate any user’s digital writing demands.
Bluetooth Capabilities - An Industry Standard
The necessity for networkable devices prompted Pen2Net to include as a standard feature in the Compupen design a Bluetooth-enabled communications module for easy interfacing into existing wireless devices. As a critical part of the ASP model, the communications capabilities of the Compupen device allow the user to process paperwork electronically after acquisition by the pen. Bluetooth Services Allow OCR and Authentication Recognizing the need for more than handwritten information, the ASP provided by Pen2Net offers users services including handwriting-to-text conversion and digital signature/document-timestamp authentication. This communications is based on industry-standard Bluetooth software found on mobile telephones and by definition meets the Bluetooth specification in the software API for extremely rapid deployment to new devices. Compupen’s Wireless E-Mail Capabilities The Bluetooth capabilities featured on the pen include document forwarding features, in which a user transmits to a central ASP or to another user via email documents written throught the day, and a subscription-based service which Pen2Net will provide for handwriting-recognition and document timestamping/authenticaion. The critical applications envisioned by Pen2Net that will rely on the subscriber model include mobile note-taking, intellectual property verification, scientific laboratory data verification, digital signature applications, and a combination of the above (e.g. digital signature accompanying patent application papers timestamped at a given date). For more information, see our Scientific Applications. By providing an arbitrary, off-pen data verification service, Pen2Net envisions a sustainable business model past the time of pen purchase and a compelling device to any scientific company with which to carry out research and development. The ASP-style interface software also conforms to industry standards, and allows a flexible API to accommodate customized needs for specific large-scale clients. h |
